Norman W. Lewis

Norman Lewis was born in Harlem and spent most of his artistic career there and was for a time part of the Harlem Renaissance. Although his earlier work was figurative, he developed a Cubist style that merged into the Abstract. Although other Abstract Expressionist colleagues of his such as Mark Rothko developed an intense following, Lewis's work never caught such wide attention in his lifetime. He died in 1979.
