Elizabeth Catlett

Elizabeth Catlett Mora was born on April 15, 1915 in Washington D.C. An established American contemporary artist, Catlett Mora's art combines elements of African traditions with those of pre-Colombian traditions.

Catlett Mora studied art at Howard University with Lois Mailou Jones, Professor James A. Porter and Dr. Alain Leroy Locke. In the late 1940's she decided to build a life in Mexico after experiencing American segregationist and racist discrimination.

The work of Elizabeth Catlett Mora can be found in many museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and The National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico City. Catlett Mora currently resides in Mexico.
